ASTRONOMICAL BULLETIN FOR DECEMBER 2018

The Moon

 

New Moon occurs on 7th at h. 12-50 I.S.T.

Full Moon occurs on 22nd at h. 23-19 I.S.T.

First Quarter occurs on 15th at h. 17-19 I.S.T.

Last Quarter occurs on 29th at h 15-04 I.S.T.

The Lunar Crescent becomes first visible after the New Moon day in the evening of 8th.

The Moon is at Apogee or farthest from the Earth on 12th and at Perigee or nearest to the Earth on 24th.

The Moon passes about 3½º north of Venus on 4th, about 2° north of Mercury and about 3½ º north of Jupiter on 6th, about 1º north of Saturn on 9th, about 3º south of Neptune in the evening of 14th, about 3½ º south of Mars on 15th and about 5º south of Uranus on 18th.

The Earth

 

The Earth is at Winter Solstice on 22nd.


The Planets

Visibility of Planets:

Mercury:   The planet was too close to the Sun to be visible in the last quarter of the previous month and it reappears again in the eastern sky before sunrise from the beginning of December. The planet rises about ½ hour to 1 hour before sunrise throughout the month. The motion of the planet becomes Direct with respect to the Earth from 7th. The planet is in Greatest Western Elongation of about 21º from the Sun on 15th.

Venus:   The planet is a brilliant object visible towards the eastern sky before sunrise and it rises about 3 hours after local midnight throughout the month. The planet is in Perihelion position or nearest to the Sun in its orbit on 26th.

Mars:   The planet sets about ½ hour to 1 hour before local midnight throughout the month. The planet is in Quadrature with the Sun on 3rd.

Jupiter: The planet is too close to the Sun to be visible upto 7th of the month. Thereafter it rises about ½ hour to 1 hour before sunrise upto second quarter of the month, about 1 hour to 1½ hours before it upto third quarter to the month and about 1½ hours to 2 hours before it for the remaining days of the month.

Saturn: The planet sets about 2 hours to 1½ hours after sunset upto first quarter of the month, about 1½ hours to 1 hour after it upto second quarter of the month, about 1 hour to ½ hour after it upto 18th of the month. Thereafter it becomes too close to the Sun to be visible for the remaining days of the month.

Uranus:  The planet sets after local midnight throughout the month. It sets about 3 hours to 2½ hours after it upto first quarter of the month, about 2½ hours to 2 hours after it upto second quarter of the month, about 2 hours to 1½ hours after it upto third quarter of the month and about 1½ hours to 1 hour after it for the remaining days of the month.

Neptune:   The planet sets around local midnight time to 1 hour before it upto second quarter of the month, about 1 hour to 1½ hours before it upto third quarter of the month and about 1½ hours to 2 hours before it for the remaining days of the month. The planet is in Quadrature with the Sun on 6th.


Conjunction of Planet:

Mars passes about ½º north of Neptune on 7th.

Jupiter passes about 5½ º north of Antares (Jyestha) on 20th.

Mercury passes about 6 º north of Antares (Jyestha) on 21st.

Mercury passes about 1º north of Jupiter on 21st.
